FAQs About Family Legacy Films
How long is a typical family legacy film or video biography??
It depends on the project and the person we’re filming. A simple legacy recording might run 45–60 minutes, while an edited video biography that weaves in photos and home movies is often 30–40 minutes. During our discovery call, we’ll talk about what feels right for your family and tailor the length to your goals.
What is the process like from start to finish?
We begin with a short call to understand who we’re filming and what you’d like to preserve. Next, we schedule the interview and send a prep guide with sample questions. On filming day, we handle lighting, sound, and camera so you can relax and talk. Afterward, we edit the footage, add any agreed-upon photos or home movies, share a draft for your review, and deliver the final film as a digital file (and any additional formats we’ve discussed).
Where do you film? Do you come to our home?
Most family legacy films are recorded in your home, our Washington, D.C.-based studio, or another meaningful location where your loved one feels comfortable. We regularly work with families in the region, and we can discuss travel for projects beyond the area.
How should we prepare the person being interviewed?
We’ll send a simple prep guide with prompts and tips so the storyteller doesn’t feel like they have to “get it perfect.” The most helpful thing you can do is reassure them that this is a relaxed conversation, not a performance. We’ll guide the questions, follow up on important memories, and give them as much time as they need.
Can we include family photos and old home movies in the film?
Yes. Many families choose to incorporate photos or home video clips to help illustrate different chapters of their story. We’ll talk through what you have, what matters most, and how to incorporate those materials in a way that supports the narrative rather than overwhelms it.
How much does a family legacy film cost?
Costs vary depending on the scope of the project—how many filming sessions we do, how complex the edit is, and how many extras (like scanning, home movie transfers, or additional versions) you’d like. After a short conversation about your needs, we’ll provide a precise estimate so you know exactly what’s included before we begin.
What if emotional or difficult topics come up during the filming?
That’s completely normal. We’ve spent many years talking with people about meaningful, sometimes painful parts of their lives. We move at a gentle, respectful pace, and your loved one always has control over what’s shared. In the edit, we can discuss how much you’d like to include and who will see the final film.
Who will be able to see the finished film?
That’s up to you. Most families choose to keep their legacy film private—shared only with relatives and close friends. We typically deliver a private digital link and downloadable file that you can share as you wish. We’ll never use your film publicly without your explicit permission.
What happens to the footage after the project is done?
We keep a backup of the final film for a set period of time in case you need another copy. If you’d like us to store or organize raw footage or additional materials for the long term, we can talk about archival options as part of your project.
